Wind Spinners, 2014

Proposal for a ‘kinetic fabric collage’ of high visual impact to be installed on the first elevation of an exterior building façade in a commercial area. The proposal consists of 8-10 wind-spinning fabric banners presented in a formal display of light and colour. The design for each spinning unit is inspired by a crossover of banner style shop signs and kinetic wind spinners. The aim is to create an artistic abstraction that reflects the aesthetic of signage in a commercial area, with an additional resonance of a carnival, fair or marketplace feel. Each spinner will be mounted on bearings allowing it to spin easily in the wind, creating a dynamic visual effect of movement. The spinners will be illuminated from above and below by electric lights.
